History
Holly Hill Mall opened in 1969, in reference to the nearby neighborhood where it was located. At the time, the mall's anchor stores included JCPenney, Belk, Sears, and Woolworth, which eventually became Goody's. Its name was changed to Colonial Mall Burlington in 1999 after being bought out by Colonial Properties Trust.
A major renovation of the mall's interior and exterior took place in 2004, adding skylights, new floor tiles, and new stores such as Hibbett Sports.[1] Colonial sold the mall in 2005 to Prime Retail, at which point the mall's name was changed to Burlington Square Mall.
In May 2010 the mall was purchased by a group of local investors. To go along with the theme of 'going back to its' roots,' the new owners renamed the mall Holly Hill Mall & Business Center.
The Present
A number of local and national businesses have signed leases since the mall was sold in 2010. A few of those stores are Clear Wireless, Hursey's BBQ, Salon Posh, Yo Zone, Color Stone, Iron Gate Winery, Super Fitness, Super Tans, Gourmet 52, La Cocina and more.[2]
The Future
The future looks bright for Holly Hill Mall. A Hibachi restaurant is currently under construction and should be open by the end of March 2011. Dave's Discount Furniture on North Church Street is closing and will re-open as Dave's Furniture Decorator's Warehouse in the former Goody's space during the summer of 2011. Bouncin' Around will relocate from the former Goody's space to the former food court and arcade during the summer of 2011. According to David Morton, Managing Partner of Holly Hill Mall, LLC, the mall is working with many local and national tenants to lease the remaining spaces in the mall.
Hamrick's is set to fill the former JC Penney space.
Competition & The Economy
In 2007 Alamance Crossing, a lifestyle center complex opened across town. Belk and JCPenney both moved to Alamance Crossing in 2007.[3][4]
On July 8, 2008, it was announced that the mall is in foreclosure proceedings.[5] The current owners purchased Holly Hill Mall from the bank.
On October 30, 2008, Goody's Family Clothing announced that its store would be closing all of their stores, including the one at Burlington Square Mall.[6]
On September 27, 2009, Books-A-Million announced that they were closing the Burlington store and was going to consolidate it with their Greensboro, NC store.
Trailhead Church[7] of Burlington moved into what was the facility for a Gold's Gym(and is currently Super Fitness) in November 2009. The church, pastored by Josh Gresham has renovated the vacant 12,500 sq ft (1,160 m2) space into their church facility. The church describes itself as charismatic and contemporary and meets every Sunday at 10:30 AM and every Sunday evening at 6:30 PM for youth.[8] Trailhead moved out of Holly Hill Mall in July 2010 after merging with Victory Worship Center in Graham, NC. Retaining the title Trailhead Church, the group now meets at 554 West Moore St. in Graham.[9]
