Harlan Records

Harlan Records

Harlan Records is a DIY punk record label owned by Nate Powell and based out of the punk community of Little Rock, Arkansas.

The label's roots date to September 1992, when Powell began self-publishing the comic book "D.O.A." with fellow artists Mike Lierly and Nathan Wilson. Lierly dubbed the small publishing imprint Food Chain Productions and a dozen more books were published under its banner. In May 1994 Powell and bandmate Eli Monster opted to expand the name by releasing the band Soophie Nun Squad's demo tape on Food Chain Records. March 1995 saw the label's first vinyl release as a Soophie Nun Squad 7". Eli and Nate operated the label together through the summer of 1995.

In Spring 1997, friend and entrepreneur Noah Goodwyn Young (producer of "To Tell You The Truth: The Eugene Andosek story", drummer of punk bands Heads I Kill You - Tails You Die!, The Traitors, The Connection, Benchmark, and Hug) stepped in to fund the struggling label. Young supplied funds for half of the label's ninth and tenth releases in exchange for renaming it Harlan Records, in honor of Young's late father David Harlan Young, whose small inheritance to Young provided the $300 necessary to complete the pressing of Soophie Nun Squad's "Dino" 7".

Harlan Records focused its releases on the diversity of sounds within the Arkansas punk scene. Until 2004, all releases contained members originally from Arkansas. Harlan Records continues to release a variety of independent music rooted in DIY punk and hardcore. Powell's label operation is inspired by 1990s punk labels Gravity, Repercussion, File 13, and Council.
