With an area of 5,700 hecatares and a capacity of 1,490,000 m³ it is the largest artificial reservoir in Chile. The lake is at an altitude of 440 meters above sea level.[citation needed]
It was built between the years 1980 and 1985, in order to retain the waters of the Maule River for use in agricultural irrigation and hydroelectric power.
Recreation
In the summer, the waters reach 23 °C. For this reason, and with the warm weather during the summer months, it is also widely used for water sports. It also offers a wide range activities, lodging and tourism services to visitors.
