- Coconut Miracle
-
The Coconut Miracle or Tenginakai Pavada in Kannada is performed during the festivities of Kuruba Gowda/Kuruma people of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It involves breaking of coconuts on the heads of the devotees, who are in a trance-like state during the pooja of the deities. In the case of the Kuruba people it is Beereshwara or Beerappa. The coconut is peeled of its fiber and the hard inner core is smashed on the head of the devotees. Surprisingly there is little loss of blood or injury, which is considered a miracle by the faithful. This type of paying gratitude to the gods is also performed by people of other communities also and is popular in "Mariyamma" temples of Tamil Nadu.
