Creo Elements/Direct (formerly CoCreate) Product Family Developer(s) Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) Stable release Creo Elements/Direct 17.0 / April 2010 Operating system Windows Type CAD and PDM Software Website www.ptc.com Creo Elements/Direct is computer-aided design (CAD) and product data management (PDM) software.
Creo Elements/Direct[1] products, 2D CAD[2] , 3D CAD[3], and PDM[4] were first developed by the Hewlett-Packard (HP) Mechanical Design Division (MDD) in the mid-80s and early-'90s. During this time, Creo Elements/Direct pioneered the "dynamic modeling" approach (today called direct modeling[5] for 3D design. In 1997, CoCreate became a subsidiary of Hewlett-Packard and then in 2000 became an independent privately held company, owned by private equity investors.
On December 3, 2007, Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) acquired CoCreate[6] (CoCreate Software GmbH) for approximately $250 million. As a part of PTC, Creo Elements/Direct products continue to be enhanced, and further developed as an integral product family for the PTC Product Development System[7]. The Creo Elements/Direct product family is direct CAD, PDM and collaboration software. The Creo Elements/Direct product family offers integrations to Windchill[8], Mathcad[9], Abortext[10], and Creo Elements/Pro[11].
The Creo Elements/Direct product family is developed in two PTC locations:
- Sindelfingen, Germany
- Pune, India

Products
The four main products in the Creo Elements/Direct product family are
- Creo Elements/Direct Modeling - A direct 3D CAD system for creating and modifying product designs. The direct modeling approach enables a quick and flexible way to work with design geometry that allows a designer or engineer to manage and manipulate unpredictable design changes.
- Creo Elements/Direct Modeling Personal Edition (PE) - A free-to-use direct 3D CAD system for individuals and home use. The software can be downloaded from the PTC Web site.
- Creo Elements/Direct Drafting - a professional 2D CAD system for mechanical engineering (originally called ME10)
- Creo Elements/Direct Model Manager and Creo Elements/Direct Drawing Manager - Integrated PDM software for Creo Elements/Direct 3D and 2D CAD systems
Competitors
- IronCAD - explicit 3D CAD
- Kubotek KeyCreator - explicit 3D CAD
- SpaceClaim - explicit 3D CAD
- Autodesk Inventor - parametric 3D CAD
- Dassault Systemes SolidWorks - parametric 3D CAD
- Siemens Solid Edge - parametric 3D CAD/explicit 3D CAD
