History
OpenBet Technology was founded in 1996 by Clive Haworth, James Caddy and Charles Malir and was originally named Orbis Technology.
In December 2000 the company was acquired by NDS Group, a News Corporation company that develops DRM and Conditional access software, and associated technologies. Orbis expanded in size under NDS ownership, through a combination of natural growth and the acquisition of a number of boutique game design companies - firstly NT Media in September 2005 and then Electracade in December 2008.
In 2010 Orbis Technology rebranded itself to OpenBet Technology, the name of its eponymous software betting platform. It also acquired Alphameric Solutions, a leading software supplier company in the betting retail space, which was renamed as the OpenBet Retail division.
In February 2011, Openbet was sold by NDS for £208m, in a management buyout backed by private equity firm Vitruvian Partners.[1] Speculation continues about the possibility of a merger with Inspired gaming, another Vitruvian owned software betting company.[2] In August 2011, Inspired gaming took over OpenBet Retail support, which includes both remote and field engineer, and began the process of moving it to their site in Bangor, North Wales.
Software
The OpenBet platform is widely regarded as best in class and is used to power the websites for some of the world's largest bookmakers such as Ladbrokes, William Hill, Betfair, Paddy Power and PMU.[3] OpenBet is also a leading supplier of online casino and slot game server technology, via its FOG and RGI platforms. The OpenBet platform supports a huge array of 3rd party integrations with credit card payment gateways, mobile applications and betting data feeds.
OpenBet websites run on a bespoke, high performance[citation needed] application server developed in-house and written in C. Most of the Openbet application logic is written in TCL, with FOG games written in Java, running on Linux.[4]
The OpenBet platform sits on top of the IBM Informix database.
Management and Operations
OpenBet enjoys a dominant position in the UK market and the company has recently expanded into Europe and North America. OpenBet signed the French monopoly provider PMU[5] in 2010 and has secured contracts with a number of Canadian lottery companies including Atlantic Lottery, British Columba and Loto Quebec.
With its global headquarters in Chiswick London, OpenBet employs over 500 employees in offices around the world, including Australia, North America, China, India and Macau.
David Loveday is the CEO of OpenBet. A strong advocate of probity and legislative compliance, Loveday succeeded the original founder of the company James Caddy in 2004 and he is now one of the longest serving CEOs in the egaming industry.[6]
Awards
OpenBet was voted one of the best 100 companies to work for in the UK according a Sunday Times survey in 2010.[7]
OpenBet is a member of the World Lottery Association.[8]
