The Climate Reality Project is a nonprofit organization founded and chaired by Nobel laureate and former Vice President Al Gore.[1] The group is involved in education and advocacy campaigns related to climate change.
Overview
Two nonprofit organizations founded by Al Gore, The Alliance for Climate Protection and The Climate Project, joined together in 2010.[2][unreliable source?] The combined organization was renamed The Climate Reality Project in July 2011.[3][unreliable source?]
The Climate Reality Project has more than 5 million members and supporters.[citation needed] According to the official website, the group is “bringing the facts about the climate crisis into the mainstream and engaging the public in conversation about how to solve it.”[4]
On September 13, 2011, the Climate Reality Project was discussed on The Colbert Report.
24 Hours of Reality
24 Hours of Reality was an event hosted by The Climate Reality Project on September 14 and 15, 2011. It consisted of a new multimedia presentation created by Gore and delivered once per hour for 24 hours, representing every time zone around the world. Each of the presentations was delivered by an individual trained by Gore, and the final presentation was delivered by Gore himself.[5] The event was broadcast live online for the full 24 hours, and it was reported to receive between 8.6 to 9 million views according to different sources.[6][unreliable source?][7][unreliable source?]
The purpose of the event was to educate the public about global warming and counter the arguments from fossil fuel industries that deny climate change science.[8] The presentation rebuts common arguments that climate change deniers make, and highlights the links between climate change and the extreme weather that happened globally over the past year.[9][unreliable source?]
