Cinder is a novel written by Marissa Meyer to be published by Macmillan Publishers through their subsidiary Feiwel & Friends on January 3, 2012.[1]

The story is loosely based on the classic fairytale Cinderella with some major changes, including changing the setting to a futuristic Asia. This retelling is the first in a four book series entitled the Lunar Chronicles. The other books will encompass the inclusion of other fairytale heroines: Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White.[2] The book itself has begun to generate buzz as the next hit series for Young-adult Fiction. The publishing rights sold for somewhere in the six figures. Despite this, there are some doubts that the series may gain popularity due to the fact that the series is a crossover between science fiction and fairytale.[3] Several ARCs were released in August, 2011 and met with mostly positive reviews.[4]

Plot summary

Cinder is a teenage cyborg living in New Beijing, a city within the plague-ridden kingdom in future Asia. She faces mysterious foes, a hateful stepmother, and a budding romance with a prince all to become the unlikely heroine for the entire Earth. Part of the lower class in society and working as nothing more than a mechanic, she digs through her unknown past to overcome her place. Cinder is "caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, [and she] must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future." [5]
