It was established in 1899 and has been staffed by the Jesuit Fathers, of which Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was himself a member.[2]
A brick church was built in 1902 to designs by W. W. Renwick of 39 W 27th Street for $60,000; and a two-storey brick schoolhouse at 223-233 West 132nd Street was built for the church in 1940 to designs by Starret & Van Vleck & Purdy & Henderson Association, Inc. of 267 Fifth Avenue and 17 East 45th Street for $60,000.[1]
