KLRT (also referred to as "Fox 16"), is the FOX affiliate based out of Little Rock, owned by Clear Channel Communications in a duopoly with CW affiliate KASN channel 38. Its transmitter is located atop Shinall Mountain alongside transmitters for other area television stations, including KARK and KTHV.

The station broadcasts its analog signal on UHF channel 16 and its digital signal broadcasts on UHF channel 30.

KLRT runs about 12 hours of locally produced newscasts each week, as well as first-run prime time and sports programming from FOX. It also runs off-network syndicated sitcoms and dramas, talk shows, reality shows, sports, and court shows.

History

KLRT signed on the air as Arkansas' first independent station and Little Rock's fourth overall station on June 26, 1983. In 1990, it became affiliated with Fox after picking up the affiliation from KASN, its eventual sister station.

During its early independent years, KLRT's slogan was "Prime All The Time".

On April 20, 2007, Clear Channel entered into an agreement to sell its entire television stations group to Providence Equity Partners.cite press release|title=Clear Channel Agrees to Sell Television Station Group to Providence Equity Partners|publisher=Clear Channel Communications|url=http://www.clearchannel.com/Corporate/PressRelease.aspx?PressReleaseID=1943|date=2007-04-20|accessdate=2007-04-20]

The original offices and studios for KLRT were located at 11711 W. Markham Street, at the southeast corner of Bowman Road and West Markham Street in western Little Rock. KLRT was the first of Little Rock's television stations to maintain a studio outside the downtown area, and remains so today. Over the years, KLRT and KASN became properties of Clear Channel Communications, along with various radio stations serving the market. KLRT vacated its original studios and moved southeast into the Clear Channel Metroplex (a converted former Sam's Club) at 10800 Colonel Glenn Road, east of Interstate 430 in west Little Rock, where all of Clear Channel's central Arkansas properties were consolidated.

The original KLRT building was razed shortly after KLRT's departure. Today, a local branch of National Bank of Arkansas, an office of its mortgage division and a San Francisco Bread Company restaurant now occupy the former studio site. KLRT's broadcast tower remains atop Shinall Mountain in western Little Rock. Following the sale of KLRT and KASN to Providence Equity Partners, both stations remain in the same complex with the radio stations still owned by Clear Channel; the special events portion of the site is now referred to as the Metroplex Events Center.

News Operation

KLRT broadcasts a total of 12 hours of local news per week (with two hours on weekdays and one hour each on Saturdays and Sundays).

The station began airing an hour-long 9PM newscast in 2004. In 2007, the station began airing two half hour early evening newscasts at 5:00PM and 5:30PM. Prior to its full-scale newscasts, KLRT provided some brief news updates and public affairs programming during its earliest years on the air. Early weather information was once presented by former-KKYK and former-KURB morning disc jockey and now KTHV Sports Director Craig O'Neill. O'Neill included a vocal rendition of his radio character "Sherman Bonner, the World's Only Human Themometer" to voiceover some of the weather introduction.

News information was presented by Bill Powell (formerly of KTHV) and Linda Gilliam on an individual basis in the early years. Ron Breeding, who then primarily worked with radio station KARN-AM (currently working with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock via KUAR) provided news and later weather information for the station in the late 1980s.
