Chomp is an app search engine company founded by Ben Keighran and Cathy Edwards in 2009.[1] The company is based in San Francisco and has received $2.5 million in funding.[2] Chomp’s app search engine is available in a Chomp app or as an integrated search box in partners’ websites or other content. Chomp’s propriety algorithm allows users to search for apps based on what apps do, not just by what they are called.[1] Users can search for apps across multiple platforms, including iOS and the Android.[3] The Chomp app can be found at www.chomp.com, and via the iTunes store and Android market.

History
In January 2009 the company launched and released it’s first iPhone app. Chomp acquired over 300,000 users in the first 8 weeks after it’s launch. Chomp received seed funding of $565,000 in November 2009.[1] By March 2010 it received a series A round of funding, of $2 Million.[2] Investors included BlueRun Ventures, Ron Conway, Brian Pokorny, and David Lee.[4] At this time, Chomp made further improvements to it’s search engine by enhancing it’s search functionality.[5]
By February 2011 Chomp brought it’s search to the Android platform and released it’s Android app.[3] This provided an improved experience from the existing search capabilities found in the Android market. By May 2011, the number of apps available had increased to 500,000 on the iOS market and 200,000 on the Android market.[6] Chomp released a complete redesign of their iPhone in September 2011. The new iPhone app included a new interface along with a faster and cleaner design.[7] In September 2011, Chomp also announced the release of their new product “Chomp Search Ads”. Chomp Search Ads allows app developers to bid on key words or phrases that will deliver their ads to users who search for those terms within the app search engine. The ads shown to Chomp users is based on relevancy and bid price.[4] This new form of targeted advertising is an alternative to display and performance advertising used previously in the industry.[8]
Partnerships
Chomp announced their partnership with Verizon in September 2011. Chomp will be powering search for Verizon’s new App Store.[9] Verizon redesigned it’s app store to improve app discover-ability on it’s smart phones. The Chomp search engine will simplify this process.[10] Chomp also powers search for Carphone Warehouse, Blekko, 148Apps.com and @aplusk
