- Chod dialect
-
The Chod dialect (Czech: chodské nářečí) is a dialect of the Czech language. It belongs to the South-East Bohemian group of Czech dialects but it is more different from the other dialects in this group, since it features some notable dissimilarities. The speakers of the dialect have traditionally been called the Chods (Czech: Chodové) and the region Chodsko.
Features
- d changes into r between vowels: standard Czech dědek > děrek, "old man"
- prothetic h before some vowels, especially u: huž (standard Czech už, "already"), hukázat (standard Czech: ukázat, "to show")
- uncommon umlauts: smíl se (standard Czech: smál se, "he laughed")
- long vowels instead of short in some positions: vaše > váše, "your", volat > volát, "to call"
- imperfect of the verb být, "to be": standard byl, byla > bul, bula, "he was", "she was"; this resulted in calling the Chods by the nickname Buláci
