The Chief of the General Staff (Serbian:Načelnik Generalštaba - NGŠ; Начелник Генералштаба - НГШ) was the chief of staff of the General Staff of Yugoslav Army (FRY) and General Staff of Military of Serbia and Montenegro. He was appointed by the President of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (from 2003, President of Serbia and Montenegro), who was the commander-in-chief.
The first Chief of the General Staff was Colonel General Života Panić, the Chief of the General Staff of Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), who became chief of staff when JNA became JA (Yugoslav Army) in 1992. The Yugoslav Army later in 2003 was renamed to Military of Serbia and Montenegro, and it existed until the dissolution of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro in 2006. The last chief of staff was Lt. General Ljubiša Jokić, who was succeeded in his post by Chiefs of the General Staffs of new armies - Lt. General Zdravko Ponoš (Serbian Armed Forces) and Lt. General Jovan Lakčević (Military of Montenegro).
