Club career

Youth and early career

Cheng Yuelei began his football career at Sichuan Guancheng in 2001 when he joined their youth team and would eventually progress to the senior team in 2005. He was included in several first team squads, however before he given his chance to establish himself within their squad the team disbanded. Nevertheless as with several other Sichuan players Cheng Yuelei would move to the current league champions Dalian Shide the following season, yet he saw his development digress when he was excluded from their first team squad and dropped to the reserves. Cheng Yuelei transferred for 800,000 Yuan to Beijing Guoan and saw himself fight for the second choice goalkeeping position with Zhang Sipeng throughout much of the 2008 Chinese Super League campaign.[1]

Shenzhen Asia Travel F.C.

At the beginning of the 2009 Chinese Super League season Cheng Yuelei transferred to Shenzhen Asia Travel F.C. for 400,000 Yuan and after several games was chosen as their first choice goalkeeper when he made his debut against Shaanxi Chan-Ba on April 4, 2009 in a 2-1 win[2]

International career

Due to his consistent performances for Shenzhen Cheng Yuelei would be called-up for the squad to play against New Zealand in a friendly match on March 25, 2011 and would go on to make his debut by coming on as a early substitute for the injured goalkeeper Zeng Cheng in a 1-1 draw.[3] Cheng would then go on to make his first start for the team soon afterwards by starting in a friendly against Honduras on March 29, 2011 in a 3-0 victory.[4]
