Early life & education
Charlie Hurt was born in Charlottesville, Virginia,[4] the first of two sons born to Charlie D. Hurt, Jr. (1918–1989); architect and Timie Young Hurt (1916–2002); executive secretary and homemaker.
Hurt spent his formative years in Waynesboro, Virginia[5] where he lived until he went to high school in Richmond, Virginia.[6] Following his graduation, he attended the University of Virginia[7] and received a Bachelor of Arts degree (1972) with a double major in English literature and religious studies. Hurt holds a Master of Science degree (1975) in information science[8] from the University of Kentucky,[9] and Doctor of Philosophy degree (1981) also in information science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.[10]
Career
After completing his doctoral degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison[11] in 1981, Hurt was appointed an Assistant Professor in the School of Library and Information Science at McGill University[12] where he taught until 1984. While at McGill he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. He joined the faculty of the School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College[13] as an Associate Professor in 1984, leaving in 1986 to join the faculty of the School of Information Resources and Library Science[14] at the University of Arizona[15] as Associate Professor and Director. He was promoted to Professor in 1991.
While on the faculty at the University of Arizona, he directed the School of Information Resources and Library Science,[16] was the Head of the Near Eastern Studies Department,[17] and served as Associate Dean, Acting Dean, and Interim Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences,[18] the largest and most diverse college at the University.[19] He held academic appointments in the Department of Communication[20] and in the Department of Anthropology (now the School of Anthropology).[21] He has significant experience in technology transfer, research policy, and distance education at the institution and system levels.
In 2002, he left the University of Arizona to become Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at West Chester University. He spent four years as dean before moving to the University of Wisconsin—River Falls to assume the position of Vice Chancellor and Provost. In 2007, he stepped down from the position of Vice Chancellor and Provost and moved to a faculty role as Professor of Computer Science and Information Systems.
In addition to his administrative activities, Hurt was twice elected to the Faculty Senate at Arizona,[22] served on the Board of the Chester County (PA) Chamber of Commerce,[23] and is a member of the River Falls Chamber of Commerce.[24] He regularly serves as a referee for a number of journals in the information science field. He has also obtained over US$2.4 million in sponsored research, grants, and contracts, including a US$1.4 million dollar National Science Foundation grant, Award 0345352, “Building Capacity to Develop Network Intrusion Detection Systems.”[25]
