He was born George Pforr, but served in the Civil War as a Private in Company K, 1st New York (Lincoln) Volunteer Cavalry under the name "Charles W. Anderson".

Citation:
The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Charles W. Anderson, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 2 March 1865, while serving with 1st New York Cavalry (Lincoln), in action at New Orleans, Louisiana, for the capture of unknown Confederate flag.[1]
