The general Charles Auguste Jean Baptiste Rouen (born 1838, Antwerp), whom one had habit to call the general “ Rouen ” without first name, was born at Antwerp the July 9th 1838. He is a Historien and Belgian soldier . He marries at Brussels on April 30th, 1862, Joséphine (Jose) Straatman, born in Brussels on April 15th 1842, daughter of the ship-owner Lambert Straatman and Marie Sophie Fautier.
The Rouen general is the brother-in-law of the general Jean Prosper Beaudrihaye who indeed married in Brussels on May 2nd 1865 Anne Caroline Straatman, born in Brussels on September 10th, 1840, sister of his wife.
His career
He was Colonel of the Grenadiers (1891), general lieutenant with the section of activity (1901), member of the committee of staff, and member of the council of improvement of the establishments of reserve training. He also fulfilled a mission at the time of the war of independence of the Italy.
His publications and drawings
He is the author of many works concerning the military history or the art of the war, but he is mainly known for his book, decorated many drawings of which he is also the author, heading: " the Belgian Army. Exposed historical of its organization, its costumes and uniforms, its armament and its tactic since primitive times until our days " , Brussels, Lyon-Claesen, 1896. This book was to count the second volume, but the bankruptcy of the editor prevented the publication of it. This book is always extremely considered and sought by the amateurs of costumes and military figurines. The Rouen general was a draftsman of talent and it remains of him drawings, for example “seen of an Italian city” or drawing of a " horse with the galop" , he is the illustrator also of his work.
General Rouen was son of hero of the battle of Waterloo and of the Belgian revolution , Guillaume Rouen, husband of Henriette Elius, born at Brussels on August 27th 1796 (10 fructidor year IV), which had been allowed like junior with the hussards de Croy on March 31st 1814 (Netherlands), which participate and was woudned 18 years old at the Battle of Waterloo (1815) as maréchal-des-logis of the hussards de Croy (Netherlands) and which was also voluntary in a frank company of Brussels on September 21st, 1830 and which became second lieutenant by decree of the regent of May 11th 1831, and died young as Capitaine of 2nd class to the 6th regiment of line. It took part in the campaigns against Holland of 1830, 1833 and in 1839.
