Anglo-Egyptian WarAwards Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath General Sir Charles Edward Nairne KCB (30 June 1836 – 19 February 1899) was Commander-in-Chief, India.
Military career
Educated at Addiscombe College, Nairne was commissioned into the Bengal Artillery in 1855.[1] He took part in suppressing the Indian Mutiny in 1857.[1] He went on to serve as a Horse Battery Commander during the Second Afghan War from 1878 to 1880.[1]
In 1882 he took part in the Anglo-Egyptian War and commanded the Artillery at the Battle of Tel el-Kebir.[1] In 1855 he became Commandant of the School of Gunnery at Shoeburyness and in 1887 he became Inspector-General of Artillery in India.[1]
In 1892 he was appointed Commander of a District in Bengal and the following year he became General Officer Commanding the Bengal Army.[1] He was acting Commander-in-Chief, India from March to November 1898.[1]
He died in 1899 and is buried at Charlton Cemetery in London.[1]

In 1860 he married Sophie Addison.[1]
