Charleroi Pre-Metro line 89
A line 89 tram in Anderlues

Line 89 is a line on the Charleroi Metro in Belgium operated by TEC Charleroi, running from Charleroi-South railway station in downtown Charleroi to Anderlues (west of Charleroi), via the southwestern part of the downtown loop.

Line 89 existed before the first stations of the Charleroi Pre-metro were inaugurated in 1976, as an SNCV tram line linking Charleroi and Anderlues. It became a pre-metro line in phases, starting in 1976, as more pre-metro stations were added to the network. The current version of the line has been in service since 1992.

Line 89 follows the same itinerary as line 88 between Anderlues and Beaux-Arts, but takes the downtown loop to the South at Beaux-Arts (as opposed to North for line 88).

Line 89 has a length of 16.28-kilometre (10.12 mi)[1], of which 3.4 km are on a standard tram line on the street (at the Anderlues end) and the remainder on pre-metro infrastructure. It has 14 pre-metro stations and 6 tram stops.

Trams drive on the right on the entire line, but the tram part of the line Anderlues runs on the left, right, or in the middle of the street. A couple of sections of the tram part of the line, in Anderlues, are single track.

Trams on line 89 run from 05:00 until 20:00.

  • Every 30 minutes on weekdays.
  • Every hour on week-ends

Between 20:00 and 22:00, a replacement bus (also numbered "89") operates with low frequency (only 3 departures in each direction on weekdays, 2 on week-ends), following an itinerary similar but not identical to the tram. Stations Piges, De Cartier and Leernes are not served by this service.

Line 90

Line 90 was a former tram (and pre-metro) line, operating on the same itinerary as line 89, but continuing past Anderlues toward La Louvière, via Binche. Historically, line 90 was an SNCV tram line between Charleroi and Mons. The line 90 which used the Charleroi Pre-metro infrastructure was an hybrid between this historical line (between Charleroi and Binche) and SNCV line 36 (between Binche and La Louvière).

Line 90 was closed on 28 August 1993, the tram line between Anderlues, Binche and La Louvière being left abandoned.
