History

The history of Chauites goes back to the last decade of the eighteen century. In the year of 1895 the families Román Ramírez and Gamboa choose this region to establish. They built their homes with palm and wood on a high part of land surrounded by vegetation. While living on this region the first settlers were surprised by the discovery of multiple dens of mouse like animals known by the name of TUZA (rodent mammal) because of this discovery the settlers decided to name the place “El Tuzal”. Over time more settlers arrived to the region like the Zacarías brothers and Juvencio Fuentes between others.[1]

That was how the life in the region was developing until 1905 when the project of General Porfirio Díaz president of Mexico at that time developed the infrastructure of the region and its official district Tepantepec. This project changed drastically the life in “El Tuzal” since many people working on president’s Diaz project decided to settle there too. The region grew and because the villagers obtained as good crops during the rain season as in the dry one. That is why the name of the region was changed to Chahuitesthat “means wet ground. As the region continue its development their settlers decided begin the process required to become an independent district since they belonged to Tepantepec. In 1948 the Chahuites was finally given its independence of Tepantepec.[1]
