Lieutenant General Atiqur Rahman [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangladesh_Army#List_of_Chiefs_of_Army_Staff] was the Bangladesh's Chief of Army Staff form 1986 to 1990.He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Regiment of Artillery, in the then Pakistan Army being from the then East Pakistan origin.
After Liberation of East Pakistan, the new nation – People’s Republic of Bangladesh was formed in 1971; where he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General appointed - Bangladesh Army Chief of Staff in September 1986 subsequently by the then President
Hossain Mohammad Ershad .His tenure was given an extension by the government. He retired from the Bangladesh Army with full Military Honours in November 1990 and did not directly pursue a political career like almost every other army chiefs of the country. He was succeeded by Lt. General Nuruddin Khan as appointed by President Hossain Mohammad Ershad.
Unlike his predecessors & especially his successors he was not corrupt - morally nor financially and above all, loyal to the Government, the Armed Forces & people of the Republic he served.
Later Life
After his retirement Lieutenant General Atiqur Rahman stayed away from public eye and did not pursue a political career like almost every other
