"Williamson v. Lee Optical of Oklahoma", 348 U.S. 483 (1955) is a United States Supreme Court decision which upheld an Oklahoma statute which required an optician to obtain a prescription from an ophthalmologist before fitting or duplicating lenses.
"Williamson" often stands for the end of the "Lochner" era and the use of economic substantive due process to invalidate laws passed by legislatures. The district court in "Williamson" had invalidated the law under rational basis scrutiny, because an optician is capable of creating duplicate lenses without prescriptions. That argument failed where the Supreme Court under rational basis hypothesized permissible purposes for the statute. Ultimately, the statute was upheld under a public health basis, as the statute was a way to have people undergo eye examinations with some frequency.
