January 2008 suicide bombing

On New Years Day, Tuesday January 1 2008, Zayouna was subject to a suicide bombing which was one of the deadliest blasts experienced in Baghdad in months. The explosion killed at least 25 people and wounded 20 others according to the U.S. military. The official death toll claimed by Iraqi police and ambulance officials was at least 32. cite web|author=Partlow, Joshua and Sabah, Zaid|url=http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/01/AR2008010100827.html|title=Suicide Blast at Baghdad Funeral of Bomb Victim Kills Dozens|date=January 2 2008|publisher=The Washington Post|accessdate=October 9|accessyear=2008]

Part of the shock of the attack was its timing in the New Year when many residents had felt a false sense of security. The bombing targetted a crowd that had gathered to mourn Nabil al-Azzawi, a Sunni Muslim teacher who had been victim of a car bombing four days before at the crowded intersection at Tayaran Square.

An Iraqi army spokesman, Brigadier General Qasim Ata' Zahil, blamed the attack on the Diyala network of the Sunni insurgent group al-Qaeda.
