African-American hip hop artist from the brownsville section ofBrooklyn, New York . He is commonly known as the youngercousin of fellowBrooklyn native andemcee Kenyatta Blake akaBuckshot (rapper) of the highly regarded 90's “golden era”rap group Black Moon. In June of 2006 Stones indepently released his first LP, “The new stone age” but with very limited promotion the project has received very little circulation around thetri-state area but has latter created a buzz on theinternet .The New Stone Age
“The New Stone Age” was released in June of
2006 through I.H. entertainment and although in somehip hop circles it has been noted as a potential underground classic, it received very little promotion due to the independent labels lack of knowledge and marketing dollars. In recent years tracks from the LP has seen some success onhip hop websites andblogs such as hiphophavoc and rapindustry [http://www.hiphophavoc4life.com/play.php?mid=8749] [http://www.rapindustry.com/hiphop_talk-radio.htm] . The most notable track off of the 06 LP was a revamped version of “Get wit it” that featured fellow brownsvillian Smoothe da hustler at the beginning in what seemed like a voice message left on Stones’ phone [http://grandgood.com/2008/07/07/stones-get-wit-it-ft-smoothe-da-hustler-audio/] . Other notable tracks include “Do what you do”, “Gotta eat”, “Bk Rap”, “Front Back (side to side)” and “Openly Arms”. The CD was produced in its entirety by I.H. entertainment’s in-house production team formerly known as Touch Not.tyxx and Stones
In 2003 Stones came up with the idea to form a
rap group with his childhood friend Dominick Bunch aka Styxx. The name Styxx was suggested by Stones to his friend because of it’s compatibility with Stones’ already acquired name and also because of it’s ability to stand alone. When asked about his involvement with the name in aninterview stones stated “One day when we were politicing in the cafeteria of our high school he told me he wanted to change his name from Infamous Dee so, later on when I came up with the idea of forming a group I thought of the name and presented it to him when we ran into each other in the hallway. I was already going by the name Stones and didn’t want to change that plus, I felt like the name was perfect because it sounded good when anyone referred to him as an individual and even better when we came together to form styxx and stones”. The group never received much success aside from occasional local talent show entries so after graduating from high school Styxx decided to enlist in the navy to get his life in order. Stones decided to take a different route despite encouragement from his group mate to also enlist but unlike Styxx, Stones didn’t graduate from high school and seenrap as his only way out so he decided to stay behind and keep pursuing his passion. While in the service styxx and stones kept in contact through letters but while Styxx was in bootcamp Stones was out making moves with theBoot Camp Clik . He was popping up more than ever in footage and photos with his cousinBuckshot (rapper) as well as making extensive power moves of his own. When returning from his stint Styxx linked up with Stones once again to record songs such as “Brooklyn!” but they haven’t done much since. To followers of the group it seems like a falling out has taken place but Stones describes it as, “just a break”. “Styxx was never really passionate about rap the way I am, he looks at it as more of an hobby than a profession. So he just comes in and out whenever he feels like it while on the other hand I’m here to stay so they gonna have to get use to me. But I don’t have any problem carrying the load while he does what he has to get his mind right”. The group has never released anymixtapes or LP’s but don’t describe their hiatus as a “break-up” more like time off. [http://www.myspace.com/styxxnstones]Controversy
Stones has been accused of dissing down south emcees with lines like “I’ll send you back to the bottom like you were from the south” that he said in an
youtube video freestyle. In aninterview he cleared that rumor up by stating “I don’t have any problem with the south but I can see how that line would be interpreted the wrong way however anyone that knows anything about geography would know that the south is located at the bottom of the map and that’s actually what I was referring to when I wrote that line”.It has also been brought to Stones’ attention that he and veteran west coast
rapper /producerDJ Quik shares the same Government first and last name [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DJ_QUIK] . When asked about the subject he Stated “That’s crazy I never even knew that, it’s a small world huh?. I respect quik as a pioneer not only for the west but for a new breed ofhip hop artists in general. He’s an artist and a producer, something I aspire to be recognized as on aninternational level too someday so I got nothing but respect and admiration for him”.References
