London - died 15 December 1984 inLondon ) was an English actor who mostly worked in theatre. He is most notable for the role of "Grandad " inBBC sitcom "Only Fools and Horses ".Pearce studied drama at the
Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , inLondon and performed for theEntertainments National Service Association duringWorld War II . He appeared in many plays at theNational Theatre including "Much Ado About Nothing " and "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead ". He was a notabletrilby wearer.On 15 December 1984, Pearce collapsed and died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 69 (just two months short of his 70th birthday) during the production of the "Only Fools and Horses" episode "Hole In One" – the episode was moved to later in the series, and scenes he had filmed on location prior to his death were re-shot with
