He wore the number 4 during his first season. He then changed to number 11 for the following 2 seasons. Once becoming a starter in 1992 he wore number 33, an unusual number for a shortstop, as a tribute to Larry Bird, a hero of his hometown. He then changed to the number 9 for his remaining 4 seasons.
