List of American spies

This is a list of spies who engaged in direct espionage. It includes Americans spying against their own country and people spying on behalf of America.

Culper Ring

The Ring was formed by Benjamin Tallmadge and tasked to infiltrate British-controlled New York City and report troop dispositions and intentions. The Ring conducted covert operations until the end of the American Revolutionary War, though its heyday was between 1778 and 1781.

Americans convicted of spying for foreign countries

* Michael H. Allen, retired Navy, gave classified information to the Philippines. Arrested 1986, eight year sentence, $10,000 fine, lost retirement benefits.
* Aldrich Ames
* Stephen Baba, 1981, attempted to sell classified information to the South African Embassy. Baba was turned in by South Africa, was court marshaled and received eighth years.
* David H. Barnett, passed on identities of thirty CIA agents. Sold information to the KGB for $92,000. Caught 1980, eighteen year sentence.
* William H. Bell, provided radar secrets to Marian Zacharski. Bell received eight years, Zacharski life.

* Robert E. Cordrey, Marine, in 1984 tried to sell classified information to eastern block countries. Twelve years hard labor, served two.
* Ludwig Forbrich, attempted to pass information to the East Germans in 1984. Caught by FBI undercover operation. Fifteen year sentence.
* William Kampiles, 1978, sold information to the Soviets.

* Richard Miller (agent), first FBI agent convicted of espionage. Seduced by Russian KGB double agent Svetlana Ogorodnikova (see below).
* Earl Edwin Pitts

Double agents

* Nicholay Ogorodnikova and his wife Svetlana, emigrants to the US. Both were KGB agents. Svetlana was recruited by the FBI to spy on the Los Angeles Russian community and seduced several FBI agents, turning one, Richard Miller (see above), to spy for the Soviets. The Ogorodnikova's received eight years and Miller, the first FBI agent ever convicted of espionage received 20. One document was passed to the KGB.
