- Caledonian orogeny
The Caledonian orogeny is a mountain building event recorded in the
mountain s andhill s of northernScotland ,Ireland ,England ,Wales , and westNorway . This event occurred during the LateSilurian to MiddleDevonian Periods of thePalaeozoic Era, roughly 420-390 Ma. Thisorogeny has been named forCaledonia , theLatin name for Scotland. The Caledonian orogeny occurred during the early assembly of continents that would eventually converge into
Pangaea . In the precedingOrdovician Period, ca. 488-444 Ma, the largest continent,Gondwana , containing the plates of the futureAfrica ,South America , andAntarctica , was located between theSouth Pole and theEquator . A second land mass,Laurentia , containing the future northeast section ofNorth America , straddled the equator. To the northeast was theSiberian plate with another continent, Siberia, separated from Gondwana by theUralian Ocean . To the southeast, theBaltic Plate with the continentBaltica was separated from Gondwana by theIapetus Ocean . A smallarchipelago -like continent,Avalonia (containing today'sNew England ,Nova Scotia , and a part of Western Europe including theBritish Isles ) was located west of Baltica, separated from it by theTornquist Ocean . TheRheic Ocean lay between Avalonia and Baltica to the north and Gondwana to the south. In the Ordovician Period, the Rheic Ocean began to open, pushing Baltica and Avalonia in the direction of Laurentia by sea-floor spreading. Baltica and northern Avalonia collided first, causing the Caledonian Orogeny of the Silurian. At the end of the Silurian and in the subsequent Devonian, the rest of Avalonia collided, causing the
Acadian Orogeny of North America, which raised the earlyAppalachian Mountains .ee also
