Joseph Silverstein (born
March 21 ,1932 ) is an Americanviolin ist and conductor.He was born in
Detroit and studied with his father, who was a public school music teacher. Silverstein studied at theCurtis Institute of Music withEfrem Zimbalist , and also studied withWilliam Primrose , andMischa Mischakoff .In 1962, he became concertmaster of the
Boston Symphony Orchestra , a position he held for 22 years. He was appointed assistant conductor in 1971. He served as acting music director of theFlorida Philharmonic Orchestra in 2001 until the orchestra's demise in 2003.
