Kalpaki (Greek Καλπάκι), older forms: -o and -on, accented form: Kalpáki is a village in the southern part of the island of Zakynthos. It is the seat of the municipality of Zakynthos. Its 2001 population was 248 for the settlement.

Location and transportation

Argassi is located west of the town of Zakynthos, northeast of Keri and southeast of Volimes.

Argassi has around 6 km of paved road and 7 km of gravel. It has approximately 6 km of hydro and phone lines.

About Kalpaki

Kalpaki is situated on the southeastern part of the island, farmlands are within the village and the coastline and to the west. The mountains which include mount Skopos lies ot the south.

History

Kalpaki was ruled by the Venetians until the Napolenic Wars when it was controlled and ruled by the French until the British invasion near the end, the Russians and the Ottoman Turks also ruled during the wars, though the Septinsular Republic was autonomous. Keri and the rest of the Ionian Islands formed a part of the United States of the Ionian Islands until 1864 which marked the end of the non-Greek rule, it finally ceded to Greece.

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, it was partially rebuilt, almost every building in the villages were completely destroyed in the 1953 Ionian Earthquake, afterwards, the village were rebuilt by the late-1950s and 1960 to rebuilt everything and at the time connected with asphalt. More pavement was accessed in the late 20th century. Electricity, radio and automobiles were introduced in the mid-20th century, television in the late-20th century and computer and internet at the turn of the millennium. Its population are growing and grew more in a ten year period between 1991 and 2001.

Panorama

Kalpaki offers a view the eastern and the western parts of the island. Kefalonia can be seen to the north but it is blocked by Skopos to the south. Other panoramic views includes the mainland and during clearer days further inland especially Ilia and parts of Etoloakarnania.

Other

Kalpaki has a church, a few restaurants and taverns, and a square ("plateia"). Its nearest school is in Argassi and lyceum (middle school) and gymnasium (secondary school) are in the town of Zakynthos.
