James Fitz-James Stuart, 3rd Duke of Berwick

James Fitz-James Stuart, 3rd Duke of Berwick

Jacobo Francisco Eduardo Fitz-James Stuart y Colón de Portugal, (28 December, 1718 - married on 26th July 1738 to a Spanish noble woman from the "De Silva" family - Valencia, 30 September, 1785, aged 57), was, at the age of 20, since the death of his father in Naples, Italy, in 1738,aged 42, 3rd Duke of Berwick, 3rd Duke of LIRIA and XERICA and many other Spanish and British nobility titles.

He was on his Spanish mother side a direct descent of the reputed as discoverer of America, Admiral Christopher Columbus, (circa 1451 – May 20, 1506) .

He married, aged 20, 26 July 1738, in Alba de Tormes, Maria Teresa de Silva y Alvarez de Toledo, aged 22, (6 May 1716 - 5 May 1790), daughter of Manuel Maria de Silva y Mendoza, (born 18 October 1677), 9th Conde de Galve, 7th son of the 5th Duke of Pastrana and Estremera and the outstandingly wealthy Spanish lady Maria Teresa Alvarez de Toledo, (18th September 1691 - 1755), 11th Duquesa de Alba de Tormes, 8th duquesa de Huéscar, 4th Duquesa de Montoro, 6th Duquesa de Olivares, 7th Duquesa de Galisteo, Grandee of Spain, and an staggering amount of lesser Spanish nobility titles(Marquessats, Earldoms, Baronetages, Viscountships,Lordships.. ....) .

They got, 14 years later, an only surviving male child reaching adulthood, Carlos Bernardo Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva, (Liria, Valencia, 25th March, 1752 - Madrid, 7th September, 1787), who died as the 4th Duke of Berwick, the 4th Duque de LIRIA y XERICA, etc., because he died in 1787, aged 35, only 2 years after his father the 3rd Duke died aged 57."'

This only son, Carlos Bernardo, married, aged 19, 9 October 1771, Princess Caroline zu Stolberg-Gedern, aged 16, (10 February, 1755 - 15 April, 1828, St.Gratien, near Paris).

This wife of Carlos Bernardo, was the daughter of Prince Gustav Adolf zu Stolberg-Gedern and Princesse Elisabeth Philippine de Hornes.

Neither the 5th Duke, Jacobo Stuart FitzJames y Stolberg, (París 25.2.1773 - married approaching the age of 17 - Madrid 3.4.1794, aged only 21) who married on the 24th January 1790 María Teresa Fernández de Silva y Palafox, (10th March, 1772 - married 1790, aged nearly 18 - Florence, Italy, 29th April 1818, aged 46), daughter of Pedro Fernández de Silva, 10th duque de Híjar, and Rafaela de Palafox, neither the 6th Duke, Jacobo José María, surviving second male son of the marriage, would have anything to see with the Great and Famous Dukes of Alba however.

It will be the 7th Duke, younger brother of the 6th Duke, named Carlos Miguel, (Madrid, born as an orphan, 19th May, 1794 - Sion, Switzerland, 7th October, 1835, aged 41), married to a titled Italian Lady, Rosalía, (1798 - 1868), from the "Ventimiglia" Princes, who would become, as seen under the adequate headings in Wikipedia, since 1804, aged 10, by "rather unforeseen remote legal chances" the 14th Duke of Alba, 10th Duke of Galisteo, and many other Spanish titles of all categories, 10 times a Grandee of Spain.
