Austro-Hungarian submarine U-III
- Austro-Hungarian submarine U-III
Austro-Hungarian submarine "U-III" was part of the Austro-Hungarian Navy's U-boat fleet during the First World War.
She was built in 1909 and was lost in December 1915.
Early history
"U III" was built for the Austro-Hungarian Navy ( "KuK Kreigsmarine") by Germania of Kiel, using their double-hulled design utilized for U-boats of the Imperial German Navy.
She was launched in August 1908 and commissioned into the KuK in January 1909.
ervice history
"U III" saw service in the First World War with the KuK’s U-boat fleet; as Italy was neutral at this stage of the conflict, her operations were against French and British forces in the Adriatic and Mediterranean seas. After Italy’s entry into the war in May 1915 "U III" operated against the Italian fleet also but had no success before her last patrol.
Fate
On 12 August 1915 "U III" was on patrol in the Straits of Otranto. She was caught on the surface and rammed by the Italian Armed Merchant Cruiser "Citta di Catania". Badly damaged and unable to dive, she escaped, but was caught again the following day by the French destroyer "Bisson" and sunk with gunfire. Fourteen of her crew were saved, but seven lost, including her commander, "Linienschiffsleutnant" Karl Strnad.
