Boat Rock Road

History

Boat Rock was named after a ridge of boulders were found on a mile long road. The origins of Boat Rock goes back as far as 325 million years ago. Intrusion of magma created a large dome under earth and several million years after cooling slowly erosive forces began to slowly expose the rocks. These boulders have been used since the late 1960's.

Geologists commonly refer this area as the Ben Hill Batholith. Boat Rock has one of the five known batholith in Greater Atlanta area. Stone Mountain, Arabia Mountain, and Panola Mountain is where the other batholith are located. The batholiths are protected from developers and will be used as parks by the citizens of Atlanta.

In the 1990's, Boat Rock was known as a project area until the city took control and tore down the area. .

Murders

The Atlanta child murders was happening strong on the Southside of Atlanta. Not to far way from Boat Rock there were some bodies found near a local school on the side of the Union Rd.Timothy Hill was also found on Jackson Parkway. This had a lot of the parents scared to let their kids go outside and play, although the murders continued to happen the kids continued to go outside. There were about 30 murders from all around that general area.

Today

The area has been cleaned up and is raising a lot of money to keep it that way. They have also built new homes to support the change, rebuilt the high school, West Lake High School, to give the kids a better education. In doing so this has made a lot of surrounding homeowners happy to know that their area value is increasing. Also there has been a decrease in crime rate since the projects have been torn down. Boat Rock is now used to host rock climbing on the many builders.
