- Flower mountain
Flower Mountain is a term from Classic Maya iconography referring to lateral or frontal depictions of a stylized and personified mountain, or mountain cave, characterized by the presence of one or more flower symbols on the mountain's 'brow'. The Flower Mountain is repeatedly found associated with solar symbols and with terrestrial water. The icon has been interpreted as (a) the paradisiac dwelling place of the ancestors, and (b) the place of celestial ascent of ancestors and (solar) sky gods. It is further assumed to represent the Tzutujil Maya concept of the 'Flowering Mountain Earth', a mountain at the world's centre whose primary manifestation is a tree of life in the form of a sprouting maize plant.
