History
Dyn (formerly Dynamic Network Services Inc.) was started in 1998 as a free service. It has since expanded to over four million users and is expanding at an ever-increasing pace. The company now also offers premium DNS and email delivery services for consumers via their DynECT Platform.
The company became a Massachusetts limited liability company on October 24, 2001.[3] In July, 2003, the company reorganized into a Delaware corporation.[4]
In 2006, the company moved to a location on Elm Street in Manchester, New Hampshire, with nearly triple the space of the previous office. In the summer of 2011, Dyn moved to yet another office at 150 Dow St., with 24,000+ square feet.
The company launched the DynECT Platform in October 2007 in response to a growing need for enterprise solutions from their DynDNS customer base. The company now has nearly 1000 enterprise customers using the globally dispersed IP Anycast DNS network and SaaS-based failover, load balancing, geo traffic management and CDN Management services.
In August 2008, the company began offering Virtual private server hosting[5] in a private beta offered to survey takers. Spring Server℠ VPS became available to all users in September, 2008. As of July, 2011 Dyn has discontinued Spring Servers as a product offering.
In June 2011, the company announced plans to open up an office in London [6] while announcing San Francisco, CA, would have a location in September 2011.
In September 2011, Dyn announced it was transitioning its SSL service to industry-leading DigiCert.[7]
Acquisitions
Dyn acquired three companies during 2010: EveryDNS,[8] EditDNS,[9] and SendLabs.[10]
Customers - Consumers & Web Enterprises
Dyn provides DNS and email delivery services to over 4mm active users worldwide with over 13mm served since the company's inception in 1998. Customers include popular websites like Amazon.com, Twitter, Netflix, Pandora, Zappos, Photobucket and more.
Third-party usage
The DynDNS update API is used by many other businesses and systems. Released as an open system, the intent was to allow easy control by third-party developers. Since its inception in 1998, the DynDNS API has been used by a number of different applications and companies, including Netgear,[11] OpenDNS, Norton DNS,[12] and No-IP[13]
A number of router manufacturers have adopted the API to include update capabilities in their devices, including Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, Cisco, Sonicwall, Belkin, Acorp and many others. Due to the open nature of the API, clients are not regulated and therefore it is impossible to track how many different devices support the API.
In May 2004, the company started providing DNS services for top-level domains, starting with the .cx TLD. DynDNS is also the sole Domain Name System (DNS) provider for the .coop TLD.
The company also provides DNS for several other TLDs: Christmas Islands (.cx), Mauritius (.mu), Solomon Islands (.sb), as well as of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (.tl).
