The Swedish Pro Tennis Championships is a defunct professional tennis tournament played on indoor carpet courts. It was part of the World Championship Tennis (WCT) circuit. It was held annually at the Scandinavium, Gothenburg, Sweden, from 1972 to 1973.

History

The "Swedish Pro Tennis Championships" were created in Gothenburg, Sweden, as part of the 1972 WCT circuit, as one of the four non-American events of the tour, with the Canada International of Essen, Germany, and the Rotterdam Indoors of Rotterdam, Netherlands. The first tournament in 1972 (which field included a sixteen-year-old Bjorn Borg), saw the victory of eventual WCT year-end No. 1 John Newcombe, cite news|author=The Hartford Courant|title=Newcombe Trounces Emerson To Win WCT Event in Sweden | url =http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/courant/access/946631152.html?dids=946631152:946631152&FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:AI&date=Nov+06%2C+1972&author=&pub=The+Hartford+Courant&desc=Newcombe+Trounces+Emerson+To+Win+WCT+Event+in+Sweden&pqatl=google|date =1972-11-06| accessdate =2008-09-28| language =English] and the second, of 1973's Group A leader Stan Smith.cite news|author=The Washington Post|title=Smith Victorious | url =http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/washingtonpost_historical/access/120308233.html?dids=120308233:120308233&FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:FT&date=APR+30%2C+1973&author=&pub=The+Washington+Post&desc=Smith+Victorious&pqatl=google|date =1973-04-30| accessdate =2008-09-28| language =English] Like many events of the WCT, the "Swedish Pro" was quickly discontinued as the circuit was searching for new locations to improve its list of tournaments. Gothenburg continued to host Sweden's national championships, as well as Davis Cup ties, and several exhibitions, like the 1976-Rod Laver/Bjorn Borg challenge match, cite news|author=The New York Times|title=Borg Beats Laver In $100,000 Match| url =http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F30F1FFE3F5F167493CAAB1789D85F428785F9|date =1976-02-28| accessdate =2008-09-23| language =English] but the city's international tennis tournament was never revived.
