Super middleweight is a
boxing weight division that has a weight limit of 168 pounds. There was interest in a division betweenmiddleweight (160 pounds) andlight heavyweight (175 pounds) in the 1970s, and a few states briefly recognized a "Junior Light Heavyweight" division at 167 pounds. During this periodDon Fullmer ,Billy Douglas , andDanny Brewer won the "world junior light heavyweight championship," although the media and most commissions outside these fighters' home states did not recognize such a division. Murray Sutherland defeatedErnie Singletary for theInternational Boxing Federation version of the title. TheWorld Boxing Association created its version of the super middleweight title whenChong Pal Park defeatedJesus Gallardo in 1987 (Park had been IBF champion before relinquishing the title to fight for the WBA version). TheWorld Boxing Council crowned its first champion in 1988 whenSugar Ray Leonard defeatedDonny Lalonde in a fight that was also for its version of the light heavyweight title.Since the early 1990s, there has been a highly competitive super middleweight division in Britain and Ireland, including the rivalry between
Nigel Benn ,Chris Eubank , andMichael Watson , which included two memorable fights and the tragic injury to Watson, followed by the emergence ofSteve Collins , who defeated Benn and Eubank, before retiring and vacating the title, and the ongoing 10-year reign ofJoe Calzaghe . In addition, fellow BritsRichie Woodhall andRobin Reid also held versions of the title between 1996-97 and 1997-98. Recently two of the current champions of the division, the undefeated Calzaghe and the likewise undefeatedMikkel Kessler had a title unification fight on November 3, 2007. Calzaghe won by a unanimous decision over Kessler and is now the undisputed champion of the division.Professional Champions
