Philip Selwyn Abraham

The Rt Rev Philip Selwyn Abraham DD was the Bishop of Newfoundland from 1942 until his death in 1955 ["Obituary-The Bishop Of Newfoundland Right Rev. P. S. Abraham" The Times Saturday, Dec 24, 1955; pg. 9; Issue 53412; col A] . Born on 29 July 1897 [ “Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X ] he was educated at Eton and New College, Oxford. After wartime service with the Royal Artillery he was ordained in 1923 and began his career with curacies at Daybrook and St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol. Subsequently Precentor of Christ Church Cathedral,Montreal then Vicar of Romford, in 1937 he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Newfoundland; and acceded to the Bishopric itself five years later.
