List of Houston Astros Opening Day starting pitchers

The Houston Astros are a Major League Baseball franchise from Houston, Texas who play in the National League Central division. The Houston Astros have used 19 different Opening Day starting pitchers in their 47 seasons. The 19 starters have a combined Opening Day record of 19 wins, 20 losses (19–20) and 8 no decisions. No decisions are only awarded to the starting pitcher if the game is won or lost after the starting pitcher has left the game.

The Astros began play in 1962 under the name Houston Colt .45s (their name was changed to the Astros in 1965 when the Houston Astrodome opened as their home park). Bobby Shantz started their first Opening Day game on April 10, 1962 against the Chicago Cubs at Houston's Colt Stadium and was credited with the win. In their first eight seasons, the Colt .45s and Astros used eight differnt Opening Day starters. In 1970, that steak ended when Larry Dierker made his second Opening Day start.

Roy Oswalt has made the most Opening Day starts for the Astros with six such starts from 2003 through 2008. Three different pitchers have made five Opening Day starts apiece — J. R. Richard (1976–1980), Mike Scott (1987–1991) and Shane Reynolds (1996–2000). Larry Dierker made four Opening Day starts for the Astros, and Joe Niekro and Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan made three apiece.

Larry Dierker has the best record in Opening Day starts with 4 wins and no losses. Joe Niekro and Don Wilson share the worst record in Opening Day starts with no wins and 2 losses each. Niekro also had one no decision.

The Astros have advanced to the playoffs nine times in their history and to the World Series once, in 2005. Shane Reynolds was the Opening Day starter in three of these seasons (1997–1999), winning twice (1997 and 1999) and getting a no decision in 1998. Roy Oswalt was the Opening Day starter in two of those seasons, 2004 and 2005, getting a no decision in 2004 and a loss in the World Series season of 2005. The other pitchers who were Opening Day starters in Astros' playoff seasons were J. R. Richard in 1980 (win), Joe Niekro in 1981 (loss), Nolan Ryan in 1986 (loss) and Scott Elarton in 2001 (win).
