Louise Pound (1872-1958) was a distinguished American
folklorist and college professor at the University of Nebraska.Early life
Pound was born in Lincoln, Nebraska to
Stephen Bosworth Pound and Laura Pound. Pound studied at the University of Nebraska (B.B. 1892 and M.A., 1895). She continued her studies at theUniversity of Chicago and theUniversity of Heidelberg , and earned her Ph.D. in 1900.She was a professor of English at the University of Nebraska for most of her adult life. Pound was part of its growth from a small prairie college to a great university.
Professional Life
Pound was a member of many professional societies. She was president of the
American Folklore Society , 1925-1927. She was the first woman to serve as president of theModern Language Association (1954-1955).An athlete in her youth, Pound was inducted into the
Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame in 1955.Personal
Pound was a sister of noted legal professor

Willa Cather 's affections, but retained a platonic friendship with her.
