- Finn Malmgren
Finn Adolf Erik Johan Malmgren (1895 in
Göteborg - June 1928) was a Swedishmeteorologist andArctic explorer.Malgrem studied in Göteborg,
Sundsvall andStockholm . In 1912 he started to study at theUppsala University where he received bachelor degree (1916). In 1917 Malmgren became assistant to professorAxel Hamberg in his observatory at Pårtetjåkko; in 1920 returned to the meteorological institute in Uppsala and year later was appointed assistant professor at theOtto Pettersson 's hydrographic institute for oceanic studies on an island in theGullmarsfjord .During 1922-25 Malmgren participated in expedition of
Roald Amundsen andHarald Ulrik Sverdrup in the Arctic, on the board of ship Maud. In 1926 he was on the board of Italian airship Norge which overflew theNorth Pole . (There he used scientific instruments fromFrantišek Běhounek .)In 1928 the scientist joined the expedition of
Umberto Nobile with theAirship Italia . During the third flight, on25 May , the airship crashed and several members of the expedition were stranded on floating ice, Malmgren with injured shoulder among them. On May 30 Malmgren, together with Italian officers Filippo Zappi and Adalberto Mariano, decided to walk back to King's Bay for help. On June 15/16 Malmgren collapsed and asked to be left behind. On July 11 Soviet pilot Chukhnovsky from icebreaker Krasin sighted Mariano and Zappi and also Malmgren's body. Mariano and Zappi were rescued the next day; the body of Finn Malmgren was not found. In the press Zappi and Mariano had been suspected they abandoned Malmgren and even of cannibalism. [For example Time in August 1928 http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,787439-1,00.html reports about the suspicions around Zappi. (Exhausted Mariano died few months after rescue.)]
