map_caption=The Sweetwater Mountains (highest peak Mt. Patterson 11,673 ft. / 3,558 m) is a small mountain range in Northern Mono county, California and Western Lyon county, Nevada. Most of the range is only accessible by 4WD vehicle, on foot, or pack animal. Most of the range is contained in the
Toiyabe National Forest . The USGS GNIS records this name *Gnis2|250177 but does not provide information on the extent of the range and gives incorrect data regarding Mt Patterson. The given data is taken from the USGS National topo map. California's Geographic Names by David L Durham notes that the range is bounded by Bridgeport Valley on the south and Antelope Valley on the north. The place name appears on the 1874 California Geologic Survey map of California and Nevada. The Sweetwater post office existed on the eastern boundary of the range in the 1920s.The ghost town of Belfort is a small gold mining camp on the south-eastern slope of Mt. Patterson. There are several other inactive small gold mining camps in the range, including Montague Mine, Angelo Mission Mine, Kentuck Mine, Frederick Mine and Long Street Mine.
The Sweetwater Mountains geology largely consists of a pluton surrounded by igneous flow from the
Little Walker Caldera .
