If You Think You're Lonely Now
- If You Think You're Lonely Now
"If You Think You're Lonely Now" is a notable 1981 single recorded and released as a single by American soul singer-songwriter Bobby Womack, released off his comeback album, "The Poet".
The song is notable for bringing Womack back to national prominence after falling into a deep creative and commercial hole during the late-seventies. The song, written and produced by Womack, talks of a man who makes good on a promise to leave his lover after a strained relationship hence the words, "if you think you're lonely now/wait until tonight, girl".
The single reached number three on the Hot Soul Singles chart, which is most prominent since Womack released the song during the time most R&B tastes were with dance music. The single helped his "Poet" album reach gold status.
The song was later revised in 1994 by Womack worshiper and follower, K-Ci Hailey, of the hit group Jodeci, whose version outdid Womack's original on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, peaking at number seventeen, and was given a shout-out by singer Mariah Carey on her best-selling 2005 ballad, "We Belong Together", with the lyric, "I can't sleep at night/you're all on my mind/Bobby Womack's on the radio singing to me 'if you think you're lonely now' but wait a minute/this is too deep..."
