SecureBurn is a
DVD-Video copy protection system developed and licensed by Protect Software GmbH, a German corporation with headquarters located inDortmund , Germany and subsidiaries in Canada and the United States.SecureBurn is used for anti-rip copy protection of recordable DVD media. It is frequently used by online DVD download-to-burn solutions based on
FlickRocket and is also often used to protect DVD screeners, for example for the Oscar orBAFTA awards.A special variant of SecureBurn, called ProtectDISC VIDEO support the protection of mass manufactured Video-DVDs.
Compatibility
SecureBurn releases are checked by independent DVD verification laboratories such as Intellikey for compatibility with regular DVD players. Every SecureBurn release is accompanied with a list of 300 tested devices (hardware and software players) of which none is allowed to fail for passing. Generally it can be said that SecureBurn adds no playback restriction and every DVD Player which is able to physically play a burned DVD plays also the SecureBurn protected version of said DVD.
SecureBurn can be combined with other copy protections such as recordable CSS.
Applying SecureBurn to a Video-DVD
SecureBurn is applied to a Video DVD happens on-the-fly without noticeable time delay. Typically SecureBurn is implemented into tools requiring the output of copy protected Video DVDs. The probably best known example is FluxDVD which is used by various DVD download sites and is approved for distributing Hollywood studio content.
Advantages
SecureBurn requires no time to apply and streams out the protected DVD data on the fly for burning without time delay. It is often referenced as being very robust and compatible.
Criticism
SecureBurn is not an open standard and although currently no compatibility problems exist, it can not be guaranteed that all future players will be compatible with the protection.
