Paul Fischer (guitar maker)

PAUL FISCHERPaul Fischer (born Isle of man 1941). British maker of musical instruments.Began making harpsichords and clavichords in Oxford 1956 under the tutelage of the renowned maker Robert Goble, with further study at the Oxford College of Art and Technology.

After military service (11th Hussars) he joined the lute and guitar maker David Rubio at Duns Tew, Oxfordshire. With the benefit of Fischer's experience, Rubio began making harpsichords, soon to be followed by theorbos, viheulas, pandoras, citterns and baroque guitars. Bowed instruments were to follow. As the workforce expanded to meet increasing demand, Fischer was appointed manager and oversaw the making of this wide range of instruments until establishing his own studio in 1975.

Remaining in Oxfordshire new premises were established in the small Cotswold town of Chipping Norton. His reputation, particularly with classical guitars was set during his time with Rubio. It was therefore natural that these would feature largely in the new phase of his career. With his already considerable experience and natural creative drive, his next challenge was to explore opportunities to adjust some of the inherent defficiences in the traditional instrument. Also to extend the range through 7, 8, 10 string instruments, alto, bass, flamenco and unique designs.

The award of a [http://www.wcmt.org.uk Winston Churchill Fellowship] and Southern Arts bursary at this time, provided the opportunity to take up the challenge. From this and the work of physicist Dr.Bernard Richardson the 'Taut' system of construction was developed. Fischer has continued in the tradition of his mentors and through lecturing, master classes and training opportunities in his studio, a new generation of young instrument makers have benefited from his vast experience of making over 1100 instruments and his worldwide reputation as a master luthier.
