Avatar Blue arrived on the Boston music scene in October of 1992, and just three months later, they had received two award nominations: Best Funk/Hip-Hop band in the Boston Phoenix/WFNX 101.7 FM Best Music Poll, and Outstanding Funk Band in the Boston Music Awards. Avatar Blue, an eight-piece original Pop/R&B/Funk band with a three-piece saxophone section was often compared to the New Power Generation and Tower of Power.
Quickly signed to a development deal by Renaissance Records, they began recording their 15 song self-titled CD and were nominated Best Unsigned Band by MUSICIAN (May, 1994), while received another Outstanding Funk Band nomination by the
Boston Music Awards , who heralded them as "champions of the local funk scene." The CD was released in February of 1995 and sold 400+ copies in its first week without the use of retail outlets. Within another two weeks the band had their CDs in Tower Records, Strawberries, and Newbury Comics chains.Avatar Blue performed with
Blues Traveler ,Average White Band ,War , and Pschefunkapus, at The House of Blues (Boston), The Roxy, Paradise, Aerosmith's Mamakin, Berkley School of Music Performance Center and many more. The band was also invited to tour for world causes likeAmnesty International and theWorld Wildlife Foundation , both of which Avatar Blue has supported by donating concert proceeds. The band gained attention by charting on college radio stations across the east coast. While preparing to release an EP CD by September of 1996, Avatar Blue received their third Outstanding Funk Band nomination from the
Boston Music Awards , and were again nominated Best Unsigned Band by MUSICIAN (June, 1996).Band members
