- Alexis (sculptor)
Alexis (
Ancient Greek : polytonic|Ἄλεξις) was an ancient Greek sculptor and statuary, mentioned by Pliny as one of the pupils ofPolykleitos .Pliny the Elder , "Naturalis Historia" xxxiv. 8. s. 19] Pausanias mentions an artist of the same name, a native ofSicyon , and father of the sculptor Cantharus. [Pausanias, "Description of Greece" vi. 3. § 3] It cannot be satisfactorily settled whether these are the same, or different persons. Pliny's account implies that he had the elderPolykleitos in mind, in which case Alexis could not have flourished later thanOlympiad 95 (400 BC ), whereasEutychides , under whom Cantharus studied, flourished aboutOlympiad 120 (300 BC ). If the two were identical, as German classicistFriedrich Thiersch thinks, we must suppose either that Pliny made a mistake, and that Alexis studied instead underPolykleitos the Younger , or else thatEutychides , whose date is given by Pliny, was not the artist under whom Cantharus studied. Kunst." p. 276] cite encyclopedia | last = Mason | first = Charles Peter | authorlink = | title = Alexis | editor = William Smith | encyclopedia =Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology | volume = 1 | pages = 129 | publisher =Little, Brown and Company | location = Boston | year = 1867 | url = http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/pageviewer-idx?c=moa;cc=moa;idno=acl3129.0001.001;q1=demosthenes;size=l;frm=frameset;seq=144]References
