The album has been very well-received by critics.
"
The New York Times " praised the songwriting as "modern and quick-tongued" with "insouciant, articulate takes on relationships in various stages of disaster". [http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/13/arts/music/13play.html?_r=1&ref=music&oref=slogin New York Times. "Partners, First-Timers, Next-Steppers" by Jon Pareles. July 13, 2008.] ]Associated Press indicated that the music was "contemporary and classic", with a "funky Motown vibe mixed with hip-hop beats". [http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2008/07/08/entertainment/e134808D06.DTL San Francisco Chronicle. "Music Review: Little Jackie debut CD" by Mesfin Fekadu. July 8, 2008.] ]Billboard called the album an excellent debut and said Coppola's fans would be pleased by the "bubbly blend of swinging hip-hop rhythms, bright R&B horns and sassy soul-siren vocals." [http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25644762/ Billboard. "Beck, G-Unit have new CDs. Also, new releases from Albert Hammond Jr., Ron Sexsmith, Little Jackie" July 11, 2008.] ]
"Salon" said that the album provided "a perfect soundtrack for a lazy summer day" and that Coppola has a "knack for satire." [http://www.salon.com/ent/critics_picks/2008/07/19/july19/ Salon. "Critics Picks: Little Jackie's 'The Stoop.'" July 19, 2008.] ]
Music
Pallin indicated that the song "28 Butts", about a woman wasting her life, was pivotal to the album with respect to its vibe, which helped set the tone for the rest. Coppola says that in terms of the lyrics she had to tone herself down, as she was "going through a little angry phase, getting in touch with my inner whore." [http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article4479173.ece Times Online. "The crazy, sexy, cool Imani Coppola of Little Jackie" by Lisa Verrico. August 10, 2008.] ] But though the material may be angry, "Billboard" noted that "attacks on brain-dead celebutantes and deadbeat boyfriends rarely feel like this much fun."
"
The World Should Revolve Around Me " was the first single and video off the album. According to Coppola, the song, which was inspired by a break-up, talks about people's need for space, reflecting the kind of thing that people say when they're angry that they might later regret. [http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/a124987/little-jackie.html Digital Spy. "Little Jackie" by Nick Levine. Augusut 22, 2008.] ]Salon singled out two other songs for comment, noting that in "Go Hard or Go Home" Coppola talked about about deep family scars without self pity and that the title track of the album captures both the "comforts and craziness of home" even for those who might not "have a Brooklyn stoop to sit on."
