The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is the state of Wyoming's largest agency, responsible for road maintenance, planning and overseeing road work, managing driver licenses and vehicle registration programs, supporting airports, aviation and the Wyoming Highway Patrol. Over 2,000 employees work at more than 60 locations statewide. Headquartered in Cheyenne, WYDOT has five field districts with district headquarters located in Basin, Casper, Rock Springs and Sheridan.

There are 33,000 miles of roads in Wyoming. Wyoming has 10 intercity bus organizations, serving 38 cities. There are 23 counties within Wyoming which have a total of 41 public transit systems. There are approximately 2,000 miles of rail in Wyoming, 100 of which are state-owned. Wyoming has nine primary service airports. Wyoming has one of the nation's lowest fuel tax rates at 14 cents per gallon, which generates approximately $6.65 million per year [Budget Program/Financial Services/Fuel Tax Administration]
WYDOT was reorganized in 1991, with the new department born from the former Wyoming Highway Department.
