William Somers Llewellyn

The Rt Rev. William Somers Llewellyn was the inaugural Bishop of Lynn from 1963 [ The Times, Saturday, Oct 19, 1963; pg. 10; Issue 55836; col C "Ecclesiastical News New suffragan bishop consecrated"] until 1972 [ The Times, Thursday, Dec 21, 1972; pg. 4; Issue 58662; col E "Resignation of the Bishop of Lynn"] . Born on 16 August 1907 and educated at Eton and Balliol [Who's Who 1970 London, A & C Black, 1971 ISBN 0713611405 ] , he was ordained in 1936 and began his ecclesiastical career with a Curacy at Chiswick [Crockford's clerical directory1975-76 Lambeth, Church House ISBN 0108153674] . From 1940 until 1946 he was a Chaplain to the Forces and then Vicar of Tetbury [ [http://www.tetburyfamilies.co.uk/html/st_marys.html List of incumbents] ] , from when on he was to have a deep affinity with the area [He wrote ”A short history of Tetbury Parish Church” (Tetbury, Tetbury PCC, 1959);and retired to the area after resigning as a bishop.] . Additionally Rural Dean of the area from 1955, in 1961 he was appointed Archdeacon of Lynn and Suffragan Bishop a year later. On retirement he continued to serve the church as an Assistant Bishop within the Gloucester Diocese. He died on 22 July 2001.
